Efficient alpha-capable output

PNG to WebP Converter

Convert PNG images to WebP in background browser workers, without transferring the source files to WebpForge. WebP supports transparency, making it useful for web graphics that need an alpha channel but do not need to stay in PNG.

The default output uses lossy WebP encoding with adjustable quality while retaining transparent pixels. Keep a source PNG when exact lossless pixel preservation or maximum editing compatibility is required.

Transparency is retained

Unlike JPG, WebP can represent an alpha channel. Transparent and partially transparent PNG pixels remain available in the WebP output. Color data is encoded according to the selected quality.

For logos with very limited colors or assets that must remain pixel-exact, compare the lossy WebP output carefully or keep PNG. The current converter does not expose a lossless WebP mode.

Use dimensions intentionally

Large PNG screenshots and exported design assets are often much bigger than their final display size. Set one dimension with aspect ratio enabled to create an appropriately sized derivative in the same conversion pass.

  • Use Auto dimensions when only the format should change.
  • Set a target width for responsive web derivatives.
  • Avoid enlarging small raster images; scaling up does not add real detail.

Practical examples

Situation
A transparent product cutout is being prepared for a modern storefront.
Setting
WebP quality 84 with dimensions unchanged.
Expected result
An alpha-capable WebP ready for compatibility testing in the storefront.
Situation
A 2560-pixel UI screenshot appears at 1280 pixels in documentation.
Setting
Width 1280 and aspect ratio on.
Expected result
A resized WebP generated without a separate image editor.

Clear answers

Frequently asked questions

Does PNG to WebP keep a transparent background?

Yes. WebP supports alpha transparency, and transparent source pixels are retained by this conversion path.

Is the WebP output lossless?

Not in the current tool. It uses adjustable lossy WebP encoding while preserving alpha. Keep the PNG if exact lossless color data is required.

Can converting PNG to WebP reduce file size?

It often can, especially for photographic or complex images, but there is no guarantee. Simple PNG graphics may already be compact. Compare each result.

Are PNG files sent to a server?

No. Decode, optional resize, and WebP encoding all run locally in Web Workers.
