What is the HEIC/HEIF format?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is based on the HEVC (H.265) video compression standard. It was engineered to capture 16-bit color depth, live photo motion data, and depth maps in roughly half the disk space of a legacy 8-bit JPEG.

While HEIC is supported natively within Apple ecosystem (macOS, iOS, iPadOS), sharing photos with Windows PCs, Linux, Android, or uploading to government/visa portals often results in "Unsupported File Type" errors.

When to keep HEIC vs when to convert to JPG

Keep your photos in HEIC on your iPhone and iCloud backup to maximize available storage capacity. When submitting resumes, tax documents, identity proofs, or embedding images in email and web CMS platforms, convert HEIC to standard JPEG format.

  • HEIC provides superior color banding prevention in gradients and skies.
  • JPG ensures 100% universal compatibility across all operating systems and web browsers.
  • Converting HEIC locally in your browser guarantees your personal camera roll remains private.
